What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, often referred to as a "cap," is a versatile dental restoration that covers the entire visible part of a tooth above the gumline. These can serve many purposes, including:

  • Repairing decayed teeth beyond the scope of fillings.
  • Strengthening teeth after root canal treatment.
  • Protecting and reinforcing cracked or worn-down teeth.
  • Covering misshapen or discolored teeth.
  • Replacing missing teeth as part of a dental implant or bridge procedure.

Traditionally, dental crowns were crafted from metals like gold or silver. While we do offer gold crowns as an option, advancements in dental technology have led to tooth-colored ceramic crowns. These provide a more natural-looking result with long-lasting durability.

The Dental Crown Process

At our officef, we strive to make your dental crown experience as seamless as possible. Our process includes:

  • Preliminary Consultation: Your dentist will assess your needs and discuss treatment options, including possible materials and procedures.
  • Digital Impressions: We use advanced digital scanning technology to create precise models of your teeth, eliminating the need for messy traditional impressions.
  • Custom Fabrication: We send these impressions to a partnered dental lab that will craft your dental crown from high-quality materials, ensuring a great fit and aesthetics.
  • Temporary Fixture: We will place a temporary crown on your tooth while your permanent crown is being created.
  • Placement and Bonding: At your next appointment, your custom dental crown is carefully placed and bonded to your tooth, restoring its function and appearance in a single visit.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns help to build up and protect damaged teeth from additional harm. Since every case is a bit different, the cost of treatment can vary from patient to patient. During your consultation with us, we will go over the estimated cost of your treatment in detail so that you don’t run into any purposes. Until then, here are some things to take into account.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Dental Crowns

There are a variety of factors that contribute to the cost of dental crowns. Here are the two that make the most significant impact.

  • Damage: If your tooth is significantly damaged, you may need another treatment method in addition to your dental crown. For example, if you need a dental filling or root canal treatment in addition to a dental crown, you should consider the cost of this treatment as well.
  • Materials: Dental crowns can be made of multiple materials, each with their own price points. We use a variety of high-quality materials, including EMAX, zirconia, gold, and porcelain.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

Dental insurance form

Dental crowns are usually considered to be a major restorative treatment by dental insurance providers. This means that they are covered at up to 50% after the annual deductible has been met and before the maximum has been exceeded. However, every plan is a little bit different, so it’s best to reach out to your provider directly so you don’t run into any surprises. If you have questions or concerns, talk to one of our friendly team members.

Dental Crowns FAQs

How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

A dental crown can often last between 10 and 15 years with excellent oral care. Its longevity depends heavily on factors such as the material of the crown (which includes options like EMAX, zirconia, gold, and porcelain), your brushing and flossing habits, and whether you grind your teeth or have an improper bite. Regular dental checkups at our office allow us to spot early signs of wear and keep your crown in good condition. Avoiding hard foods and refraining from bad oral habits like smoking or using your teeth as tools is also key to ensuring the long-term protection of your restoration.

Does It Hurt to Get a Dental Crown?

Getting a dental crown should not be outright painful, thanks to the efforts made by our team and the use of local anesthesia. During the procedure, we will carefully numb the area of your mouth where we’ll be working so that you’re fully comfortable while the tooth is shaped and the crown is placed. We also offer sedation dentistry to ensure you’re completely relaxed and calm throughout the visit! You may feel some mild pressure, but not any sharp pain. After the numbness wears off, some patients experience temporary sensitivity or soreness, but this usually improves within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. If your discomfort persists or feels unusual, don’t hesitate to contact our team; we may need to make an adjustment to your crown.

How Will I Know When My Crown Needs to Be Replaced?

You’ll know a dental crown needs to be replaced when you begin noticing changes in how it looks, feels, or functions. Common signs to look for include:

  • Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Pain or looseness when biting or chewing
  • The crown is chipped or cracked
  • There’s a noticeable dark line along the base of the crown

Remember, since not all issues are easy to spot on your own, regular dental checkups and cleanings at our office are crucial for keeping your crown intact!

Will Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of a Dental Crown?

Many dental insurance plans offer partial coverage for dental crowns, particularly when the treatment is deemed medically necessary to restore a damaged or decayed tooth. The amounts vary by plan, but often, 50% coverage is possible after you’ve met your deductible. The type of crown you choose may also affect how much is covered. Before treatment begins, our team can review your benefits with you and make sure that you’re making the most of your plan and paying as little out-of-pocket as possible to restore your smile.
